Frank van Vliet

Frank van Vliet graduated in 2004 as a Physical Geographer from the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. During and after his studies, he worked at the Amsterdam Water Supply Company (now Waternet), where he was primarily involved in the maintenance and management of the groundwater monitoring network—collecting field data, performing validation, analysis, and reporting.

In mid-2005, he joined Artesia, where he has gained extensive experience in groundwater and surface water modeling, data analysis, geohydrological measurement techniques, and the development of hydrological software tools, including ArtDiver.

For the modeling of hydrological systems, Frank uses a variety of analytical and numerical calculation methods, including TimML, MODFLOW, and SOBEK. Thanks to his broad knowledge and experience with different modeling tools, he has the expertise to select and apply the most appropriate modeling approach tailored to the specific question—a true custom-fit model. Combining different modeling tools is also an option. For example, he has experience linking analytical and numerical groundwater models (ArtTim and MODFLOW) and, through his work on several GGOR studies, has gained knowledge on the interaction between groundwater and surface water models (MODFLOW and SOBEK).

Thorough analysis of measurement and calculation results, as well as a careful and independent working method, are central to Frank’s approach. He excels in data analysis and has extensive experience in validating and analyzing groundwater measurements. To support this work, he frequently uses the mathematical software MATLAB, which allows him to efficiently generate input data, control modeling tools, and visualize and analyze both measurement and simulation results in a highly flexible way.
