Frans Schaars graduated as a hydrologist from Delft University of Technology in 1995. After a year of research at the Amsterdam Municipal Waterworks, he began working as a geohydrologist at Kiwa Water Research, specializing in density-dependent flow. In 2001, Frans co-founded the research and consultancy firm Artesia with two other colleagues from Kiwa.
Frans has extensive experience in groundwater flow modeling for complex studies and in visualizing measurement and calculation results. He is also involved in various (inter)national development projects for hydrological software. Notable examples include modules for the widely used groundwater modeling program MODFLOW, such as the Density Package, the Sea Water Intrusion Package, and the grid refinement tool MODGRID.
For tailor-made solutions, he works with the mathematical software Matlab, which is also highly suitable for visualizing results through three-dimensional graphics and animations.
